Promote a Positive Work Environment

Discipline is never an easy topic. But a well-thought-out policy can make it so. Having a clear disciplinary action plan ensures employees and employers know what’s expected of them and what to expect of others. It helps everyone recognize their responsibilities so that all see the contributions they make, and so everyone works toward a fair, equitable work environment.

Discipline is one subject that employers like to avoid. Our training course can help you approach in a straightforward way to promote a more positive work environment.

Protect Your Company from Liability

Employees have responsibilities—but they also have the right to a fair and discrimination-free workplace. Our progressive discipline training course is designed to help you mitigate discrimination and treat all staff under the same policy. Through real-life training exercises, you’ll learn how to document your disciplinary policy to show you treat all employees fairly and that you comply with all federal and provincial labour standards, including the Canadian Labour Code.

Progressive Discipline

A Smarter—Fairer—Disciplinary Policy

Progressive discipline refers to a disciplinary system with escalating penalties upon each repeat offence. Designed to mitigate offences, it helps you manage discipline without being overly punishing.

Upon first offence, the employer might give a member of staff a verbal warning. If the employee repeats the offence, the penalty may escalate to a more serious disciplinary action, such as a written reprimand. Finally, if the offence continues, the employer may resort to suspending or terminating the employee.

Progressive discipline ensures staff members have ample room to learn and grow from their mistakes. It seeks to reduce offences but focusing on teaching, not punishing. It also provides a clear framework to document offences to protect the employer in case of dispute.

Discipline Discipline

Problems We See Regularly

The Employer gives the employee a series of verbal warnings and does not keep a record of these warnings. After a while, the Employer can no longer tolerate the inappropriate behaviour of the Employee and decides that they want to terminate him/her. They consult their lawyer and realize they did not apply progressive discipline. All of a sudden the Employee is bombarded with written reprimands, suspensions without pay and then termination all within a very short period of time. This is the WRONG WAY to apply progressive discipline and it can be costly to proceed in that fashion.

Help Your Employees Succeed with Progressive Discipline

Nobody wants to punish their employees, but correcting poor performance with proper disciplinary measures is a great way to encourage appropriate behavior. Our training courses will help you retain your employees and improve their performance by handling any issues with a suitable penalty for the situation at hand. At the end of the day, progressive discipline promotes personal improvement.

Progressive Discipline Case Studies

A portion of our seminars will be dedicated to providing progressive discipline examples. Your instructor will cover several different situations in which a progressive discipline policy can be applied. We will cover how to handle them correctly and common mistakes that you could make so that you will be able to utilize your training effectively.

Delivering Consistent Discipline

One of the guiding principles behind progressive discipline is to let your employees know that you are setting clear and fair guidelines for behavior. By handling similar situations, in the same way, you can establish how people are supposed to act in your work environment.

An example of how to properly apply a progressive discipline system include:

  • First offense: counseling
  • Second offense: verbal warning
  • Third offense: written warning
  • Fourth offense: Disciplinary action

Of course, every situation is different and requires an appropriate response. Book a seat in one of our seminars to learn how you can address any problem in your workplace.

Keeping a Record of Your Disciplinary Action

One of the things that we will be highlighting during your course is the importance of proper documentation. By keeping a record of any actions that you take, you can ensure that you always react accordingly the next time something happens. Our seminar will teach you how to take organized notes and maintain consistency among your employees.
